Kashmir Travel Guide
Everything to think through before you go — when to visit, how to get there, how long to plan for, and what to pack for a Kashmir trip.
Best Time To Visit Kashmir
Kashmir has something to offer across most of the year — the right season depends on what you want to do.
April To June
Mild weather and blooming gardens — a comfortable season for general sightseeing and Gulmarg's Gondola.
July To September
Best window for Sonamarg, Pahalgam and higher-altitude trekking, with clearer mountain routes.
October & November
Autumn colours across Srinagar's gardens and Pahalgam's valleys, with fewer crowds than peak summer.
December To February
Gulmarg turns into a snow destination, popular for winter sports, while Srinagar sees a quieter, colder season.
How To Reach Kashmir
Srinagar Airport is the main gateway to Kashmir, with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai, and connecting flights from most other major Indian cities. Road access is also possible via Jammu, along the Jammu-Srinagar highway through the Pir Panjal range.
Which route makes sense depends on where you're starting from — our city-specific guides go into more detail on flight, train and road options.
How Many Days To Plan
3–4 Days
Covers Srinagar and one nearby destination, such as Gulmarg or Pahalgam, without much rushing.
5–7 Days
The most common range — comfortably fits Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg together.
8–10 Days
Room for offbeat destinations like Doodhpathri or Gurez Valley, or a slower pace throughout.
What To Pack For Kashmir
Layers, Always
Temperatures shift through the day and with altitude — layering works better than one heavy jacket.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Heavy winter jackets, thermals, gloves and waterproof footwear, especially if you're visiting Gulmarg for snow activities.
Spring & Summer (Apr–Sep)
Light layers with a jacket for cooler evenings and higher-altitude spots like Sonamarg.
Everyday Essentials
Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a valid photo ID for travel and hotel check-ins.
A Few Planning Notes
Permits
General Kashmir tourism doesn't require a special permit for Indian citizens. The Amarnath Yatra is the exception, requiring Shrine Board registration.
Travel Advisories
As with any trip, it's worth checking current government travel advisories closer to your travel dates.
Currency & Connectivity
The Indian Rupee is used throughout, and mobile connectivity is generally reliable in Srinagar and the main tourist destinations.
