The Overland Route

Srinagar To Leh, By Road

The road from Srinagar to Leh runs through Sonamarg, over the Zoji La pass, and on through Kargil — a journey that's as much a part of the trip as the destinations themselves. Most itineraries cover this in two days, with an overnight stop along the way.

Starting in Kashmir and travelling overland to Ladakh also helps with altitude acclimatization, since the gradual gain in elevation is easier on most travellers than flying directly into Leh.

Frequently Asked

Kashmir Ladakh Tour: Common Questions

How does the Kashmir to Ladakh road route work?

The route runs from Srinagar through Sonamarg, over the Zoji La pass, through Kargil, and on to Leh. It's a genuinely scenic overland journey, typically covered over two days with an overnight stop in Kargil or Sonamarg.

How many days should a combined Kashmir Ladakh trip be?

Most combined itineraries run 12 to 14 days, allowing time for the Kashmir circuit (Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg), the overland journey to Leh, and the Ladakh circuit (Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake).

Is the Kashmir to Ladakh road open year-round?

No. The Zoji La pass closes with heavy winter snowfall, so the overland route is only open in the warmer months, generally June through September.

Should I do Kashmir first or Ladakh first?

Most itineraries start in Kashmir and travel overland to Ladakh, which also helps with gradual altitude acclimatization compared to flying directly into Leh.

Can I fly back from Leh instead of returning overland?

Yes. Many travellers fly out of Leh at the end of the trip rather than making the return overland journey, which saves time.
