Unlike Baramulla or Ganderbal, which are mostly known for one destination each, Anantnag district genuinely does double duty. For most travellers, it's simply "where Pahalgam is." Pahalgam's Own Character

Set apart from the pilgrimage route, Pahalgam itself is a genuinely calm stop on a standard Kashmir circuit — pine forests, the Lidder River running through the valley, and a noticeably slower pace than Gulmarg's more built-up tourist infrastructure. The Amarnath Yatra Connection

If you're specifically planning around the Amarnath Yatra, Pahalgam is one of two traditional routes to the cave shrine, alongside the Baltal route further north. This is a separate undertaking from standard Kashmir sightseeing — it requires its own registration through the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, a valid permit and health certificate.
